The Busker’s Beacon is a future concept based on technology available today. It is used by buskers to attract people to their location. The Beacon live-streams the audio from the busker’s performance to phones within a certain radius of the busker. The Beacon interacts with the StumbleUpon app which guides the user to the busker.
If the listener enjoyed the performance, they can also give money through the Beacon and its NFC payment capabilities. Buskers are licensed by their local council and given the Beacon in partnership with StumbleUpon to try and increase the welfare of street performers and reduce the negative connotations that surround their profession.
This was a project that came from a brand repositioning group project. We chose StumbleUpon and brought their online exploration to the physical world. We wanted their new direction to allow people to go on journeys; happen across amazing experiences; and ultimately learn from them. StumbleUpon wants you to 'Break the Mould' of everyday life and go see something new. The Busker's Beacon is one of 6 products, each designed by a member of the group to embody StumbleUpon's new values.
